EEG - Knypersley - 2015
The Subtle Side of Staffordshire
The EEG enjoying a brief sojourn near Leek
Talk about a game of two halves. On Saturday, we were deep into the psyche of the landscape, as manifest by the dowsable spirit of place - while on Sunday, we were immersed in the reality of substantial, mapable energy grids, reflected in both the hot spots and cold corners of human activity.
Over several decades, Gary Biltcliffe and Caroline Hoare have amassed a wealth of historical and antiquarian knowledge, which is increasingly supported by their own burgeoning dowsing and personal psychic experiences. Their trademark earth energy book The Spine of Albion had been so long in the gestation that it was a potential classic even before the print was dry. It is still selling like hot cakes, especially up and down the Belinus/Elen lines (which is a significant chunk of the Kingdom). This complex of currents flows deeply and quietly through the countryside of Staffordshire which, as Gary points out, is something of a forgotten corner of England. Yet, Staffs is close to the heart of old Mercia, and its significant sites are steeped in the spent lifeblood of the realm.
After one of Gary’s impeccably tailored slide slows (ably prompted by Caroline, stage right), we were off to find hidden gems in the ancient woodland around Knypersley, on the edge of the Peak District. There, we visited Gawton’s Well, Gawton’s Stone, a hole in the hillside (which might or might not project the setting winter sun on to an arc of erected stone pillars), and a quiet modified waterfall shrouded by protective trees. Of these, the well (actually a natural spring with man-made stonework, dated by dowsing back to the time of St Chad) was the most impressive. It is a ‘proper’ sacred site, with crossing water and earth energy lines (including the Elen line, a dozen or more paces wide, and with at least two outlying bands either side), together with associated spirals and manifestations. It has a substantial, but pinpoint perfect ley thrown in for good measure, and dowses as having been a place of healing and insight beyond the horizon of recorded history. Group member Barbara Hudson, a spirit artist, sketched ‘The Lady of the Spring’ which, rather aptly gave the essence of this predominantly feminine glade a recognisable presence.
The other sites all dowsed as natural features, probably enhanced by man, but each of which has developed its own positive energy, due to the veneration of successive generations. The massive cube of Gawton’s Stone may have fallen from the peak above around the dawn of the last millennium, but its sheer physicality and its anthropomorphic ‘face’ have brought people across the ages to seek help and healing here - and clearly they still do.
Sunday’s activities also looked at the interaction of the human plane with forces unseen. There are many dowsers for whom the earth grids discovered by Herr Hartmann and Monsieur Curry either do not exist, or only exist in the minds of certain wishful thinkers. It was a pity that there were none of them sceptics present, as this was, by some measure, the most coherent and persuasive description of the subject that I have heard to date.
Steve Dawson has investigated these grids for many years, and has extensive experience of them, both in the UK and in several Middle Eastern countries. As a former marine, who is now employed by international mining organisations, Steve is not one to hide behind the less well-defined aspects of the craft. Yet his definitive, practical findings align closely with the views espoused by those of a more spiritual or psychic persuasion.
Steve was able to show how the Hartmann and Curry grids give rise (naturally) to locations that are both beneficial and detrimental - and that at a few rare crossing points, hugely influential energy flows. These places are invariably locations of great wisdom, wonder or warfare. Sacred sites, such as pre-reformation churches and Egyptian pyramids, always embrace the positive mega meeting places, which gives food for thought - and a need to investigate - for all those of us who thought that such phenomena were something to do with leys, underground water and geologically derived energies!
Given the orientation of the grids in relation to true north, and their global resistance to every planetary change except major earthquakes, it is hard not to see them as forces inherently related to the mass, spin and transit of the earth through space. However, coming to a consensus as to whether their nature is gravitational, electromagnetic or something else, as yet unknown, I fear would have required another weekend entirely!
Steve is disarmingly open-minded about the origin of the matrices. He is far more interested in investigating how they present themselves, and in the impact that the nodes of power they create have had on human history, archaeology, theology and folklore.
At that point, he perfectly reconnected the theme of the weekend back to where Gary had started it the previous morning.
Two days of thought-provoking talks; field trips amidst beautiful scenery; a well appointed and welcoming village hall; knowledgeable and dedicated speakers; and convivial company. What more could you ask for?
